TypeTalk: Optical Kerning and Scaling Surprises

Q. From what I can tell, Adobe Illustrator's Optical Kerning feature is adding space at the smaller font sizes to keep the spacing between letters distinct. My problem with this is that it changes layouts, rags, etc., but "scaling in proportion" by definition isn't supposed to change anything except for the overall size. Auto Kerning (or Metrics, in InDesign) doesn't cause the same problem.

A. You're an acute observer. What you call a problem is actually a rather sophisticated feature of Adobe InDesign and Illustrator, but unless you know about it and how it behaves in certain situations, it certainly can become a problem! Read on...

Double Spaces Between Sentences…NOT!

Much has changed along the journey from typewriters to setting type on computers. Still, there are a number of typewriting conventions that are no longer relevant but which stubbornly refuse to go away. At the top of this list is the practice of putting two spaces between sentences. Forget about tolerating differences of opinion: typographically speaking, typing two spaces before the start of a new sentence is absolutely, unequivocally wrong.

Senior Designer/Art Director Needed

B&G Design Studios, located in the Old City section of Philadelphia, is looking
for a Senior Designer / Art Director to produce consumer magazines + other related projects. Our ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about magazine design, loves typography and working with photographers and illustrators. Our candidate should have excellent design skills and strong motivation, plus good organizational skills and the ability to juggle several projects at once. Previous experience in magazine design is a must.

The candidate will be responsible for:
• Conceptualizing and commissioning photography and illustrations, and organize/track all art for each issue.
• Designing columns and feature pages for magazines and related marketing materials.
• Working closely with the Creative Director/Edit team to plan and produce magazines, meeting tight deadlines on a monthly basis.
• Proficient knowledge of working with and creating templates from scratch.

Candidate must be proficient in CS3 and Quark Xpress and have knowledge of Microsoft Office and Word. Knowledge in Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash and basic HTML is always a bonus. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts or Graphic Design
strongly preferred.
