Looking for a jr. designer

Hey everybody -

I apologize for the somewhat mass email, but I finally got clearance on getting some design help and I am terribly excited to get the word out. Yes, I’m at work on memorial day, so that should tell you exactly how badly I need said help. And I’m emailing you because I a) respect your judgment in such things “design” b) you may be in a position to hear about fresh new designers looking to start out and/or c) I don’t think you’d send me someone who will make my life miserable. So if you know a fresh young graduate, or someone new enough in the biz to still be looking for an entry-level position, please send them my way. (It is a true entry-level position, but if there’s someone really fab who is more designer than junior designer I MAY be able to negotiate with the hiring team, but no guarantees there, I barely got this approved.)

Requirements:

— good design skills, with a quick hand at indesign especially, photoshop & illustrator a must.
— definite knowledge/interest in science fiction/fantasy/comics
— experience in blogging, web, social media a plus, but not necessary.

Job:

— mechanicals design for Orbit Books (scifi and fantasy) and Yen Press (manga comics)—and for those of you not familiar with publishing speak, that means they take an already-designed cover and make the spine/back/flaps to go with
— some catalogs, ad promo projects
— light admin, along the lines of scanning, chasing invoices, routing things around the building
— very good opportunities for expanding into covers, series logos, self-driven projects for the web/for authors

It’s a really good position for someone to grow in, and get to take on a lot more as they go on, as there’s only 2 of us holding down both imprints and I’m not very formal about hierarchy. The really important thing is that they like the geeky stuff, because if they don’t, we’ll drive them mad with quibbling over spaceship details and the manga will make them want to claw out their eyes. But it’s heaven for a geek.
